Cosmologia filosofica

Philosophical Cosmology

Submission deadline: June 1, 2022

Vol. 10, Fascicolo 2, 2022, of “Thaumàzein” [https://www.thaumazein.it/]

Edited by Marco Russo (University of Salerno)

The concept of the world has long been central to philosophy. Just today, at the time of globalization, systemic ecology and space travel, it is instead little considered. This call intends to solicit a new debate in the philosophical field but suitably open to science. In fact, it is about discussing the elements that come together in the concept of world: the relationship between some key concepts of physics (time, space, movement, matter, life), metaphysics (God, totality, foundation, ontological categories) and anthropology (action, freedom, community, good, value). On the border between theoretical thought and intuitive vision, symbolism and concrete practices, the world is from the very beginning linked to Heaven and Earth, to kosmos and saeculum, in the attempt to obtain a unitary picture, that is a representation of what, more or less conflicting, unites man, nature, artefacts. Hence some guiding questions: When does a set of facts or things constitute a world? Is the world primarily a physical or social dimension, is it more a representation or a reality? Does the world coincide with the nature? Do the origin of the world and the origin of being coincide? Is a plurality of worlds really possible?  In what sense is human action worldly? Has the world a normative value? What is the relationship between politics, history and cosmology? Within the framework of these questions, contributions are invited on the following topics:

  • Central philosophical moments in the history of the concept of the world
  • Analysis of the concept of world between physics, biology and metaphysics
  • Peculiar aspects of the ethical-political concept of the world
  • World and representation today: imagines, symbols, maps, networks, that depict the globalization or the contemporary universe

The abstract (200-250 words) must be written in English. The paper can be written in Italian or in English and must not exceed 45,000 characters, including spaces, and be prepared for blind review, removing all self-identifying references.

Kairos e Apparenza

Scadenze: 1 giugno 2021 (titolo e abstract); 1 dicembre 2021 (testo)

1.500 caratteri, in inglese): 1 giugno 2021 ad arianna.fermani@unimc.it

Kairos and Appearance

Deadlines: June 1, 2021 (Title & Abstract); December 1, 2021 (Text)

Special Issue of “Thaumàzein” [https://www.thaumazein.it/]

Edited by Arianna Fermani & Daria Mazzieri

The call for papers aims to focus on the two concepts of kairos and appearance, considered individually and/or as a pair, and in their theoretical, practical and poietic facets.

The spatial and temporal dimensions – structurally implied in, respectively, appearance and kairos – are variously intertwined, as proved, for example, by the fact that the Latin word occasio (literally what “unexpectedly falls before us”) comes to mean something like a “visible manifestation” of the kairos.

More specifically, reflection is encouraged on the semantic and etymological aspects of the two terms, working on the dialectic between words and concepts.

The aim is to delve into key historical and conceptual passages, through a close adherence to ancient philosophical texts, that represent a necessary touchstone for reconstructing the relation between kairos and appearance.

Furthermore, among the possible determinations of the nexus between the two notions, particular attention is invited on the connection between proper moment and appearance, between physis and aisthesis.

Submission of title and short abstract (1.500 characters max., in English): June 1, 2021 to arianna.fermani@unimc.it

Socratic Eudaimonia and the Care for Others

eds. L. Napolitano, D. Morrison, A. Stavru

Monographic issue of the online journal “Thaumazein”: https://www.thaumazein.it (Volume 9, Issue 1, 2021)

Despite the appearances given by certain texts, the moral psychology of Socrates need not imply selfishness. On the contrary, a close look at passages in Plato and Xenophon (see Plato, Meno 77-78, Protagoras 358, Gorgias 466-468, Euthydemus 278, Lysis 219; Xenophon, Memorabilia 3.9.4-5) suggests that the egoist’s welfare depends upon the welfare of others (i.e. family or friends). Since the welfare of the egoist’s family and friends is part of the egoist’s own eudaimonia, the egoist has a direct and intrinsic motive to promote the welfare of these others.

This multilingual volume will explore the role that other peoples’ welfare plays in Socratic ethics. Special attention will be paid to test-cases in which the principle that moral action is always good for the agent seems to have no validity. I.e., under which circumstances is the self-sacrifice for the sake of others (such as the soldier’s self-sacrifice on the battlefield) good for the agent (as in Alcibiades I 115a-116d)? Chapters will deal with contradictions or tensions of this sort, and relate them to more general views on eudaimonia held within Socratic literature. Comparison between different Socratic authors will be used as a means to identify the distinctive features of Socratic eudaimonia if compared to other Greek theories of happiness, such as the Aristotelian theory of philautia (NE IX, 1166a-1166b; 1168a-1169b). Sections of the volume will be devoted to “Philautia and Justice,” “Altruism and Knowledge,” “Dialectics and Protreptics,” and “Telos and Predestination.” Short papers on these or related topics will be considered for publication.

Deadline for submitting a proposal (= 1,500 characters long abstract): August 10, 2020.

If the proposal is accepted, deadline for submitting the paper: October 31, 2020.

Expected publication of the volume: March 2021.

Maximum length of papers: 30.000 characters (spaces and footnotes included).

Language of papers: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, French.

Morphology, Plasticity and Transformation between Philosophy and Biology

Submission deadline: 15 April 2020

Special Issue of “Thaumàzein” [https://www.thaumazein.it/]

Edited by Alessandro Minelli, Salvatore Tedesco and Maria Rosa Lupo

In biology, interest in form was the prerogative of developmental biology, while it was practically neglected by evolutionary biology. This situation has changed a lot in recent decades and has led to a reinterpretation of the concept of evolution and evolutionism focusing more on the problem of form and morphology. In Italy, especially Alessandro Minelli, one of the editors of this issue, has dedicated his studies to the need to communicate form to structure, to reconnect morphology and evolution. This theme is a highly relevant one for philosophy, inasmuch as the question of form and morphology, since the days of Goethe and Bergson, has always been considered as the starting point for a philosophy of the living being endowed with its own categories that cannot be reduced to those of physics.

This is a double-bind peer-reviewed journal. Contributions should be submitted in English and should not exceed 12,000 words, including abstract, footnotes, and references. Manuscripts should be prepared following Thaumàzein’s style guidelines (https://www.thaumazein.it/la-rivista/about-the-journal/formatting-guidelines/), and should not have been published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to Guido Cusinato (guido.cusinato@univr.it) within the 15th of April 2020.

Psychopathology and philosophy in relation to the existence of human beings

Submission deadline: 30 September 2018

Special Issue of “Thaumàzein” [https://www.thaumazein.it/] (2018)

The analysis of mental disorders necessarily requires a careful and multilayered reflection. Psychiatry is indeed focused on complex phenomena and symptoms that can be only partly traced back to merely quantitative objectifiable data. This is the reason why we can witness a growing methodological and conceptual “mutual enlightenment” between philosophy and psychiatry. Whereas philosophy offers notions that can help to take into account also the qualitative aspects and the lived experiences of pathologies, clinical psychiatry seems to represent one of the most relevant practical fields that allow philosophy to test its explanatory capacity regarding its several central issues. The history of phenomenological psychopathology, in particular, shows that among philosophers there has been a keen interest in the practical consequences of these issues in the field of clinical psychopathology.

It is important to note that psychiatry, in diagnosing and analyzing some disorders as well as in elaborating therapeutic directions, turns to the concepts that have a pronounced philosophical relevance. Human being, common sense, self, lived body (Leib) and inanimate body (Körper), intersubjectivity are some of the concepts employed to comprehend several psychopathologies, for instance, those entailing profound emotional and intersubjective disabilities such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder and depression. On these concepts there have been vivid philosophical discussions. It is therefore quite difficult to imagine, for example, that the connections between time, body and otherness which emerge in certain psychopathologies can be analyzed, completely detached from the philosophical debate over these issues or without asking whether there is any relationship between mental disturbances and the peculiarity of human existence.

Considering these convergences, this CFP aims at investigating possible relationships between specific psychopathological symptoms and a series of crucial issues of philosophy, such as:

  1. Anthropogenesis and Phenomenology of Emotions;
  2. Intersubjectivity and Direct Perception of Expressivity of the Other;
  3. Phenomenology of Embodiment;
  4. Minimal Self and Plasticity of the Process of Human Formation (Bildung)
  5. Value-ception (Wertnehmung), Order of Feeling, Philosophy of Person;
  6. Atypical Social Cognition and Common Sense.

Contributions should be submitted in English and should not exceed 10,000 words, including abstract, footnotes, and references. Manuscripts should be prepared following Thaumàzein‘s style guidelines (https://thaumazein.it/formatting-guidelines-for-authors/), and should not have been published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to Guido Cusinato (guido.cusinato@univr.it) within the 30th of September 2018.

MAX SCHELER AND THE ASIAN THOUGHT IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION

24-29 Novembre 2017
Sun Yat-Sen University
Guangzhou, China

DEADLINE: 1ST MAY 2017

The 14th International Conference of the Max Scheler Gesellschaft will take place in Guangzhou, China, at the Sun Yat-Sen University, from 24th to 29th November, 2017. Its core topic will be «Max Scheler and the Asian thought in the age of globalization».

A call for papers is hereby announced, in order to select 10 Max Scheler scholars who will receive board and lodging during the Conference. Please submit to the President of the Max Scheler Gesellschaft, Prof. Guido Cusinato (guido.cusinato@univr.it), and to Prof. Liangkang Ni (hssnlk@mail.sysu.edu.cn), from the Sun Yat-Sen University: a curriculum vitae, a title of the paper and a short abstract in either English or German. Please check the validity of your passport already when submitting the application.

Submissions must be sent within 1st May, 2017. The chosen candidates will be requested one photocopy of their passport, with at least 6 months validity from the day on which they will present the application for the visa. They will afterwards receive the official invitation to request the visa to the People’s Republic of China. Please remind that the visa has to be requested a couple of months before the departure.

The Conference is aimed at analyzing and developing some of Scheler’s topics in an intercultural perspective, and at comparing them with the Asian thought. Core topics will be globalization, the Ausgleich between the East and West, grief, death, emptiness of the heart, health, medicine, and happiness. In this perspective, particular importance will be assumed by some Schelerian texts such as Vom Sinn des Leiden and Der Mensch im Weltalter des Ausgleichs.

In the essay Vom Sinn des Leiden, Scheler states:

The text that best expresses Scheler’s intercultural perspective is Der Mensch im Weltalter des Ausgleichs (1927). The concept of Ausgleich is fairly complex. In some respects, by the term “Ausgleich” Scheler means something similar to what we call today “globalization”. In this process, Scheler sees some dangers as well as opportunities. Indeed, he refers to two forms of Ausgleich: one that results into military conflict, destruction and leveling, and one that conversely leads to growth, flourishing and respect for differences. Understanding the logical processes that drive towards one direction or the other becomes therefore essential for the destinies of mankind.
